In the big cities - Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Recife - people should be just as careful as in any other big city in the world. The incidence of crime against tourists is greater in areas surrounding beaches, hotels, bars, and other similar establishments that cater to visitors. The major tourist destinations have police departments specializes in dealing with tourists and their bilingual, trained staff are dedicated to provide the services to foreign tourists.
Medical care is generally good, but it varies in quality, particularly in remote areas. Prescription and over the counter medicines are widely available. Emergency services are responsive.
Road conditions in Brazil vary widely throughout the country. State roads are often excellent, while federal, interstate roads are often very poor due to lack of maintenance. The railway system in Brazil is very limited. In contrast, Brazil's air transportation is well developed with 48 main airports.
